Story Highlights
Mogo, a Canadian fintech company, is shaking things up in the investing world with the launch of “Buffett Mode” – a self-directed investing app aimed at countering the pitfalls of meme stock chases and impulsive trading.
David Feller, Mogo’s CEO, highlights the issue the app addresses: “Investors are bombarded with gamified platforms that fuel FOMO (fear of missing out), encouraging risky bets over sound strategies.” This “get-rich-quick” mentality often leads to losses, especially for new investors.
Buffett Mode takes its name from legendary investor Warren Buffett, renowned for his long-term value investing approach. The app discourages frequent trading by incorporating features that add “friction” to the process, encouraging users to make deliberate decisions.
Mogo leverages behavioral science to instill good investing habits. Their “Build Your Legacy” calculator motivates a long-term perspective, encouraging users to think beyond quick gains. Additionally, the app avoids features that promote speculation, such as margin trading.
Most trading platforms resemble casinos. Some estimate that as many as 70% to 90% of retail investors lose money. We’re on a mission to change that by creating the first investing app that helps you invest based on the principles of Warren Buffett. We call it “Buffett Mode”. pic.twitter.com/CLAsLlzbG4

Mogo integrates Buffett’s wisdom throughout the app, offering educational resources aligned with his investing philosophy. This emphasis on learning empowers users to make informed decisions.
Mogo’s flat $15 monthly subscription model stands in stark contrast to traditional commission-based fees. This structure aligns Mogo’s success with that of its users, as profits aren’t tied to high trading activity. There are also zero commission fees and zero added FX fees.
Mogo goes beyond just finances. A portion of their subscription fees goes towards replanting Canadian forests affected by wildfires. This allows users to invest not just for their future, but for a more sustainable one as well.
Mogo’s “Buffett Mode” app offers a refreshing alternative to the fast-paced, often reckless world of online trading. By promoting discipline, education, and long-term value investing, Mogo empowers users to become more informed and responsible investors.
