Education Revolution Underway: Trump’s Bold Move to Swap Federal Control for State Power

On July 14, 2025, the United States Supreme Court issued a landmark judgment to lift a lower-court injunction.  This meant that the Trump administration could proceed with enormous layoffs and a significant restructuring of the United States Department of Education.  Education Secretary Linda McMahon is reportedly planning to cut over 1,400 jobs and outsource vital functions such as civil rights enforcement, special education, and student loans to other federal agencies.

What This Means to Students

Former President Donald Trump has long sought to reduce Washington’s control over education and return it to states and parents. Many conservatives support this local-first model, but education experts worry that eliminating federal supervision may make it more difficult to protect students with disabilities, undermine civil rights measures, and disrupt the national student aid system. WHYY reports that departments such as the Office for Civil Rights and the Institute of Education Sciences have already had to let off a large number of employees, raising worries about a lack of transparency and accountability.

Financial Aid and Loan Services in Danger

The Department of Education is responsible for over $1.5 trillion in student loans. These loans may shortly be transferred to the Treasury or Small Business Administration.  This might result in processing delays and confusion for over 40 million borrowers. According to the Washington Post, critical federal subsidies such as Pell and Title I may also be distributed to states as block grants, raising concerns about justice.

The Big Picture

The presidential order initiates significant changes, but Congress must yet approve the agency’s complete elimination.   States and advocacy groups are still suing, and future court decisions may limit the breadth of these reforms.   People with a stake in this are closely monitoring legal changes and tweets from Trump’s official Truth Social account.  He keeps repeating that the goal of this effort is to return “the people” to control of American education.

As the country witnesses this transformation, the future of public education in the United States is at a critical juncture.  It must strike a balance between allowing states more autonomy and the risk of removing protections for millions of pupils.
