Labour Crisis Deepens as MPs Pressure Starmer to Set Exit Timeline

• Last updated: Monday, June 22, 2026

UK Government in Meltdown

The political future of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hangs in the balance as a massive leadership crisis engulfs the Labour Party. Now, a group of ministers and MPs is openly urging Starmer to set out a clear roadmap for his departure. Over the weekend, intense private talks revealed that his core support within the Cabinet is rapidly evaporating.

Cabinet Support Crumbles as Deadlines Loom

Things fell apart for Starmer when Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander became the first cabinet minister to explicitly demand his resignation. Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds also cautioned the Prime Minister with a blaring warning. Reynolds said that there is a substantial group of Labour MPs that wishes to get an exit date now.

Insiders suggest a wave of Cabinet resignations will hit Downing Street next week if Starmer refuses to announce a transition plan before Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting. Despite the intense pressure, Starmer remains defiant. He told associates that he plans to go on stiff resistance to any contest by the authorities to his leadership. He is currently using the weekend to huddle with family and close allies to plan his next moves.

Rivals Position for a High-Stakes Leadership Battle

At present, over 100 Labour MPs have demanded Starmer’s resignation, some 25 per cent of the parliamentary party. The momentum moved further after Andy Burnham won the recent Makerfield by-election. Burnham is arriving in Westminster on Monday, and his allies believe he is the natural successor.

Senior Labour figures like Lord Falconer have publicly stated that the current political deadlock cannot continue for the sake of the country.

In the meantime, there are already shadow campaigns for next year’s election in the works. Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting will have key discussions in the near future to discuss the party’s future. There are rumors that Streeting may be traded for a position higher up such as Chancellor.

Pro-Starmer loyalists are passing round memos to discredit Burnham, but party colleagues like former Home Secretary Alan Johnson have given the Prime Minister their message loud and clear: it’s over.
