Crypto mixers were supposed to be on their way out. However, they continue to operate, to maneuver funds and are now under fresh pressure.

China’s Warning Shot

The Chinese prosecutors recently proposed an audacious notion. In a July 2026 article of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate journal, a legal writer contended that operating a mixer can constitute a red flag with regard to money laundering. It is not law as of now. This is however an indicator of where regulators are heading.

The single question for years was a simple one. Is it even possible for governments to turn off mixers? The answer is now clear: not easily.

The Tornado Cash Twist

Take Tornado Cash. In 2022, it was added to the U.S. sanctions list for laundering billions, including those connected to the Lazarus Group from North Korea. Courts subsequently challenged them. In March 2025, the Treasury dropped the sanctions completely.

But that did not stop Tornado Cash. To date, it has been one of the best solutions for privacy on Ethereum. The code survived. It was not easy for those who did it. One of co-founder Roman Storm has been convicted and prosecutors are seeking a retrial on upgraded charges. Other developers continue to battle in court abroad.

This split matters. Law enforcement has begun to crack down on individuals, not code.

A Market That Keeps Adapting

The overall mixer landscape has also evolved. Real, centralized mixers, whether ChipMixer or Sinbad, were shut down quickly, with real servers and real individuals to arrest. Things as decentralized as Wasabi Wallet and Railgun were much harder to touch.

There are new privacy tools coming to the market as well. With Privacy Pools, users can present clean cash, while maintaining a private transaction. It is one of the earliest, compromising efforts between privacy and trust.

Tracking Tools Are Getting Smarter

In the meantime, blockchain trackers are growing more astute. Now they learn about timing, amount and patterns, besides the wallet addresses. Using a mixer no longer ensures anonymity.

The Bigger Picture

Now it isn’t about banning technology. It has to do with the way that the government relates to the people that use it.
