Nvidia Considers Investing $250 Billion in OpenAI Project
Nvidia is also in discussions to provide up to $250 billion in financing for OpenAI. The money would support a huge data center project in Ohio worth about $500 billion, according to a Bloomberg report.
This is an indication of how close AI companies are to each other nowadays when there is a need to develop. Nvidia is the company behind chips powering AI models. Those kinds of chips are crucial to running OpenAI’s systems. Now Nvidia could also help pay for the buildings that house them.
Inside the Ohio Project
SoftBank’s SB Energy business will handle the Ohio project. In the end, it will provide 10GW of computing performance. This is about the same electricity that a few million people use in their homes. It is expected to be in full operation in 2028.
With an agreement for Nvidia to guarantee financing, that might help ease borrowing costs for SoftBank. It would also help ease OpenAI’s path to signing a long lease of power, buildings, and equipment.
Building on an Already Close Relationship
This would not be Nvidia’s first big bet on OpenAI. Already, the company announced a commitment of up to $100 billion for a plan to deploy 10 GWh worth of its systems. The Ohio project is also connected to Stargate, a broader initiative spearheaded by OpenAI and SoftBank that is pledged to drive up to $500 billion in U.S. investment.
Why Some Are Worried
Even so, there are some unpleasant realities about the transaction. Critics know this process as circular financing. Nvidia would be helping fund a customer that mostly buys Nvidia chips. So it’s possible that Nvidia’s own funds will further drive sales of its own product.
But supporters have a different view. According to them, this kind of deal breaks funding hurdles and hastens construction. Currently, computing power is scarce, and speedy construction contributes to the AI industry’s overall ability to meet demand.
What Happens Next
Discussions are still at a preliminary stage, though. It’s not final yet. Terms may change or the transaction may collapse before closing.
Should it indeed execute, this transaction would represent one of the biggest investments ever into the future of AI. It also demonstrates how technology firms, rather than only banks and investors, operate in today’s world and influence huge construction projects.
