Trump Says Iran Ceasefire Is Effectively Over

• Last updated: Saturday, July 11, 2026

President Trump says a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran is essentially over, raising concerns of further escalation between the two countries.

In Ankara, Trump told his NATO counterparts led by the chairman that the interim accord no longer served any purpose and that he had little faith in the ongoing talks.

He spoke after the U.S. initiated new military strikes against Iran after three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz were attacked.

Ceasefire Agreement Faces Serious Pressure

Recent events have severely tested the fragile diplomatic setup. Direct contact between soldiers had been halted and the ceasefire allowed both sides 60 days to discuss a larger settlement.

It also had assurances of shipping safety passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and waived sanctions on some oil exports for Iran.

This has now changed dramatically.mWashington pointed out that Iran is responsible for attacks on the vessels at the strategic waterway.

In response, the U.S. undertook military action and lifted the waiver they had granted on Iranian oil sales. Tehran says the decisions breach the terms of the deal and jeopardize diplomacy.

Diplomatic Talks Remain Uncertain

Despite rising tensions, US officials have indicated that negotiations could still continue. But their journey going forward is unclear.

The talks have already been postponed after Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies. Diplomatic efforts have involved Qatar, which said future meetings would be planned once the events are over.

With the recent escalation, now both parties must be ready to enter into a second round of talks.

Strait of Hormuz Back in Focus

The centre of the dispute is still the Strait of Hormuz. The passage is also crucial for international oil trade, and any blocking of the passage would be a critical event for governments across the world and energy markets.

As a key route for world oil shipments, slight security concerns can have a huge impact on global supply chains and fuel prices.

Oil Prices Rise as Market Concerns Grow

Trump’s remarks and the renewed conflict risks quickly spilled into the financial markets. Oil prices began to rise as traders discussed a potential supply disruption. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to nearly $75 per barrel and Brent crude approached $79 per barrel.

The experts suggest that if the instability persists for a long time, it could lead to a rise in shipping costs, strain oil supplies and drive up fuel prices. Investors and policymakers will be watching to see if diplomacy can stop another crisis between Washington and Tehran.
