Crypto Exchange BitMEX to Shut Down After 11 Years
BitMEX, one of the largest crypto trading brands, is closed forever. The exchange will cease operations September 23, 2026. HDR Global Trading Limited, the company behind BitMEX, called after a deep review of its business.
The exchange has urged its users to take quick measures. Traders are required to liquidate all open trades and withdraw the money before the due date arrives. At the last minute, BitMEX has told everyone that their money is secure.
A Pioneer of Crypto Derivatives
This is a significant occasion in the crypto sphere. BitMEX is a major player in crypto derivatives trading and was launched in 2014. Putting it simply, derivatives allow traders to speculate on the future value of an asset without necessarily owning it.
One form of derivative, called perpetual futures, was made all the rage by BitMEX. In fact, just about all the major crypto exchanges are now providing the same product and a lot of that can be attributed to BitMEX.
Yet the exchange reports that it didn’t lose a single dollar of customer funds in any hack. It’s a solid record for a sector where you’ve seen a few hacks in the past.
Leadership Shake Up Before the Shutdown
The closure follows a management reshuffle. In recent months, CEO Stephan Lutz, CFO Ina Steiner and Chief Commercial Officer Raphael Polansky have all quit. Peter Wilkinson, who previously served as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, stepped in as the new CEO. Some analysts believe these changes hinted at talks of a possible sale.
Years of Regulatory Pressure
BitMEX has also been under pressure from US regulators for years. In 2020, authorities accused the exchange of breaking anti money laundering rules and failing to properly verify its customers. The case continued until January 2026, when a U.S. federal court imposed a fine of $100 million on BitMEX. The exchange pleaded guilty and the court dismissed the rest of the charges against it.
The End of an Era
BitMEX’s exit marks the end of an era for one of crypto’s original trading platforms.
